چکیده

The bound water fraction (XBW) of a newlydeveloped pH-sensitive, biodegradable chitosan-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (GA) was investigated as a function of the chitosan/PVA molar ratio, GA concentration (CGA), and ionization state. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to determine the XBW of the initial hydrogel, and of the hydrogel equilibrated in pH 3 and pH 7 buffers. Changes in XBW during swelling and shrinking of hydrogel were also investigated. In the initial state of hydrogel, XBW increased with increasing PVA concentration (CPVA), without being significantly affected by CGA. In the buffer-equilibrated hydrogels, XBW decreased with increasing CPVA and decreasing CGA. The amount of bound water based on dry mass (CBW) was substantially higher when the hydrogel was in the ionized (swollen) state compared to its unionized counterpart. This may be due to the association of a large quantity of water molecules with —NH3 groups of chitosan when the gel swelled in the acidic environment. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Simulation of Drug Concentration Changes in Swollen Hydrogels with Different Compounds of Chitosan and Gelatin Based on PVA

Introduction: Mathematical modeling of drug release is one of the ways to improve the rate of drug diffusion and infiltration in swollen hydrogel based systems. Using this method can provide a better understanding of the mechanisms of drug control and its release. Hydrogels are a swollen biomaterial that needs to be controlled for use in drug release. Purpose and methodology: In this study, fiv...

Selected properties of pH-sensitive, biodegradable chitosan-poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel

Chitosan and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were used to form a semi-interpenetrating polymeric network with glutaraldehyde as the cross-linker. The molecular weight and degree of deacetylation of the chitosan were 612 kDa and 72 %, respectively. The chemical bonds formed by the cross-linking reaction and transition of these bonds in different pH media were investigated. The gelation property of the...

Synthesis and Properties of Thermo-Sensitive Hydrogels Based on PVA/Chitosan/PNIPAAm

Thermo-sensitive hydrogels were prepared by graft copolymerization of Polyvenylalcohol and chitosan with N-Isopropylacrylamide via gamma radiation. Characterization of hydrogels such as DSC analysis and swelling and solubility tests in different ratios were investigated. DSC and solubility analysis showed chitosan and PVA and NIPAAm monomer were grafted via gamma radiation successfully. Results...

Comparison of the performances of four hydrophilic polymers as supports for lipase immobilisation

Four hydrophilic polymers in the form of beads - chitosan, alginate, alginate/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and chitosan-coated alginate - were used as supports for lipase immobilisation. Hydrogel beads were characterised by bead-size-distribution estimation, surface morphology studies, and polymer interactions assessment. Matrix performances - loading efficiency, immobilisation yield, enzyme activi...

Non-woven PGA/PVA fibrous mesh as an appropriate scaffold for chondrocyte proliferation.

Non-woven textile mesh from polyglycolic acid (PGA) was found as a proper material for chondrocyte adhesion but worse for their proliferation. Neither hyaluronic acid nor chitosan nor polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) increased chondrocyte adhesion. However, chondrocyte proliferation suffered from acidic byproducts of PGA degradation. However, the addition of PVA and/or chitosan into a wet-laid non-woven...
